Dear all TBC Old Boys' Association members,

Term 3 is well under way and there has been a large amount of activity with the Old Boys since my last update.  We have hosted functions prior to the very successful TBC show of Spamalot  as well as in both Auckland and Wellington. As always it was good to catch up with some of you and especially good to see a number of new faces fronting up at these events.

Our Annual Dinner is fast approaching  -  Friday  September 11th  -  at which Old Boy and Member of Parliament Todd Muller will be the Guest Speaker as we recognize Bill Holland as our Old Boy of the Year.  Bill’s  support of the school and the Tauranga community has been immense  over a long period of time and this most fitting award  has been recognized with his  being awarded one of five Tindall Foundation awards for Outstanding Community Service.  Bill’s leadership in driving the Acorn Foundation since 2003 has seen $200 million promised for philanthropic purposes to the Community for which he was recognized by the Governor General at Government House.

The Annual Winter Tournament week begins August 31st and as usual we have a significant number of students scattered around the  country.  The boys would appreciate your support if you are able to get along to see any of them.

Report of TBC Old Boys' Association President Richard Craven to the 2015 AGM

When reflecting on the report card for our 2014 -2015 year, it seems appropriate to align the language with this evening's.  On that basis I'm pleased to report a  MERIT, and it's a MERIT with: “next year impresses as one of great opportunity“.

A MERIT on the back of a sound platform established by our Patron Bill Holland and for that Bill we thank you for your inspiration.

For those that attended last year's dinner, the special evening launching the Garth Sim Centurion Scholarship, it's been heartening to all involved that attendees, even this  week, talk about how much they enjoyed the evening and the sense of the Old Boys Association coming of age.

And it's by no mean a co-incidence that it's at this stage we are proud to announce tonight we will be formally nominating for Life Membership of the Old Boys Assn Mr Bill Holland. Messrs Geoff Olsen and Robert Mangan will later be speaking to Bill's nomination.

It's with pride this evening, that the Executive can report of four new initiatives being established during the year and now available for the support of our young men as they traverse the challenges and opportunities through Tauranga Boys' College.

Dear members,

It has been a hectic term at school, with a wide range of activities as well as a visit from the Education Review Office that I will report on in my next update. Here is the latest news and as always if there is anything else that you would like reported on please let me know.

Events

The Annual General Meeting of the Old Boys Association saw changes to the Committee as inaugural President Bill Holland stood down and Richard Craven was elected in his place. Matt Billett, who has been our Secretary since inception has also stood down after 5 years sterling service  to the Association.

At the AGM long-serving staff member Fred Newton was inducted as a Life Member of the Association – the 9th person to be so honoured.

Annual Dinner & Sports Day – September 19th

Basketball, football, hockey, rugby & volleyball matches against the currentschool first teams will be contested on Friday afternoon, before dinner in the evening. A good number of tables have been purchased already so get your mates together to support our main event of the year.  Leading New Zealand artist Nigel Brown will be recognised as our Old Boy of the Year, while Ryan Johnson will make a very interesting guest speaker. At school Ryan was in the 1st XV rugby and rowing 8 before heading to university to study marine biology. He has become one of the world’s foremost authorities on great white sharks, with TV documentaries on the Discovery Channel and National Geographic.

Book your tickets on www.tbcoba.org.nz or get in touch with me for any further information.

Super 8

Winter codes are building up towards their respective tournament weeks. Footballwere placed 3rd at their Super 8 tournament, while the Hockey XI were defeated in the final of their Super 8 by Palmerston North BHS. Unfortunately, at our quadrangular tournament the following week a couple of season ending injuries disrupted their tournament preparation. At that tournament Westlake BHS, Kings College and TBC all ended with 3 wins, while Super 8 winners PNBHS headed home without a win!

The 1st XV season is over after an entertaining 47-34 loss to Rotorua BHS in the BOP qualifying for the top 4 competition. The side was very competitive throughout the season, however a number of close losses saw them finish 7th for 2014.

Squash

Our squash players have just completed an impressive 3-peat of national titles, winning the tournament in a canter. Only Christchurch BHS were able to take a game off them all tournament, with TBC winning the final 4-1. Unsurprisinglythree team members were subsequently named in the NZSS team – Josh Oakley, Jamie Oakley and Alex Revington.

Surfing

TBC surfers faced big swells at Raglan when they contested the national champs recently. Consistent efforts from all of our surfers saw the team finish third overall, with best performer Jordan Griffin placing second in the Under 18 event.

Gymnastics

Year 13 student Henry Smith performed with distinction at the recent NZSS gymnastics competition, emerging champion in the A-grade competition.

Basketball

TBC Basketball scooped the titles at the BOP Championships earlier in the month. The Senior A team were untroubled in taking their 3rd Division 1 title in a row, while the Senior Bs backed up that performance with victory over Katikati College to take out the Division 2 award. In the junior divisions the Junior A side beat a bigger Otumoetai side to win their grade, while the Junior B team won the Division 2 title to complete the clean sweep.

Hockey

Three current 1st XI players have recently returned from the National Under 18 tournament, where Midlands gained the silver medal in the 8 team competition. Head Prefect Hamish McGeorge, Wade Bennett and Denym Clarke were joined by old boys Joseph Lyons and John Preece to give a strong TBC flavour to the side.

Motocross

TBC riders were prominent at the Auckland Secondary School Champs held at Mercer this past weekend. Riders placed 2nd, 3rd & 4th in a very competitive 250f class, with Johvann Phillips the top performer.

Waterpolo

Sean McKenzie has been selected in the New Zealand Under 16 side.

Two TBC lads, Adam McKenzie & Liam Moffat, were part of the Tauranga club team that won the national under 14 boys’ title.

Old Boy Sports

Aussie Rules

Adam Simpson is flying the TBC flag at the AFL International Cup in Melbourne, where he is competing for the NZ Hawks in this 3 yearly competition against teams from around the globe. To date the team has dominated its opposition with a 162-0 win against the Swedish Elks and 188-0 victory over China. The side was then beaten by PNG but rallied to take the bronze medal from South Africawith a one point victory.

Hockey

Commonwealth Games competitor Andy Hayward was back in Tauranga and spoke at assembly about his Games experience. The 180 test veteran and 4th top goalscorer (75) in NZ hockey history is off back to Europe almost immediately, where he will play league hockey in the UK. He is looking forward to the Olympics in Rio in 2016.

Cricket

Old Boys from TBC are going to be more prominent in Northern Districts first class cricket plans in the 2014/15 season. Debutants from last year Joe Carter and Bharat Popli have both won contracts, joining captain Daniel FlynnKane Williamson has his national contract and recently scored 189 for Yorkshire, who lead the top division of the English Championship.

Basketball

Tauranga basketball is on the upswing, with the Tauranga City Marinerscompeting strongly in the inaugural SAS Sports Central Basketball LeagueOld boys Ashton McQueen and Matt Fullerton, who were in our first 5 last season, are important members of the side.

Rugby

A couple of TBC  Super 15 stalwarts will not feature in the 2015 edition as they head  off overseas to ply their trade.  Tanerau Latimer has signed to play for theJapanese side Toshiba Brave Lupus after 7 seasons and over 100 games for the Chiefs, while Jarrad Hoeata has a 3 year contract with the Cardiff Blues. Another TBC old boy in the UK is Daniel Braid, who captained the Sale Sharks in the 2013/14 season.

The Steamers season has begun with losses to Southland and Tasman – Old Boys included for the season are Nathan Harris, Dan Hollinshead, Carl Axtens, Te Aihe Toma, while in the development team are  David Smart, Aaron Carroll, Jeff Thwaites, Nick Evemy, Steve Honey and Hamish Boyce.

We have had some good rugby playing gappies from the UK in the last few years and I have just heard from Andy Vilk that after representing England at 7s and a professional career in Italy he has now been appointed Italian 7s coach and is hoping to see them qualify for Rio.

Ruaridh McConnochie was the first of our gappies from Cranbrook School in Kent where I taught in 2010 and he has just returned to England from Rio with agold medal won in the University 7s competition. On the strength of his performances there, Ruaridh has been called into the full England set up for a 2 week training camp. Ruaridh played fullback for Rangataua in 2011.

Sailing

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke retained their 49er European title in Helsinki and then headed to Rio for the test event 2 years out from the Olympics, which they also won.

Football

The Tauranga City United side, which features a number of TBC old boys, clinched promotion to the Northern Region Division 1 a couple of weeks back. With a resounding win at the weekend they claimed the title, with Andrew Cooper completing a first half hat trick and finally scoring 4, while Josh Nelson got abrace in the 6-0 victory.

Old Boys Arts

Jeremy Redmore has just released his long awaited solo album “Clouds are Alive”. After a very successful time as lead singer with Midnight Youth Jeremy is now looking to forge a solo career.

Shane Cortese has just been seen on local screens in a 2 hour “Nothing Trivial” special. The popular show was abruptly cut in 2013 and this programme tied up some loose ends with the potential for further series in the future. Shane has been following work opportunities in Las Vegas and Australia in recent months.

James Rollestonwho starred in the highly regarded movie “Boy” while at TBC, has been seen on movie screens in recent weeks in the film “ The Dark Horse”,which also stars Cliff Curtis, Karl Urban & Keisha Castle Hughes.

Dylan Frewin has returned to Tauranga having completed a degree in performing art, majoring in musical theatre.  He has been instrumental in setting up the Mauao Performing Arts Centre, where he teaches theatre and drama and will look to perform some of his own work.

Old Boys Politics

Former TBC students Ben Rickard and Todd Muller are both standing for parliament in this year’s election.  Ben is standing for the UnitedFuture party in the Bay of Plenty electorate, and has also been placed 5th on the party’s list.  Todd Muller is standing for National and is the favourite to win the seat and enter parliament as MP for Bay of Plenty.

Old Boys Adventures

Josh & Zac Lyon have decided to take up the challenge of walking across the four largest icecaps on the planet (4 Caps Challenge) and have got $ for $ support from Spark to assist them in their endeavours. Follow their expedition on Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/FourCaps.

Rugby
The 1st XV has been depleted by injury in recent times but completed their Super 8 campaign with a fine 22-11 win over Gisborne BHS.  Next weekend they play Rotorua BHS (away) again and victory there would see them

Tauranga Boys' College Old Boys' Association (Incorporated)

Presented at our AGM on Monday, 5 August 2013...

This has been another very good year for the College itself and for our Association.

Most of you will have had the opportunity to read the Principal's Report to the 1912 Senior Prize-giving, and some of you will have read the regular newsletters to parents.

The academic results achieved last year were exceptional: especially at senior level. These were matched by success in both sporting and cultural areas . The students of the College continue to "punch above their weight". The appearance of no fewer than seven (I repeat seven) TBC Old Boys in the 2012 London Olympics was of world significance. The resultant medals to Mahe Drysdale (gold), and Peter Burling (bronze) were icing on the cake.

Committee member and long time staff member of TBC, Rob Leslie, continues to keep us up to date with the activities of our Old Boys in his regular newsletter.

The Old Boys' Association was established in May 2009 with the principal objectives of helping maintain friendship between Old Boys and promoting and encouraging the College, its students and staff.

Past Activities

The Executive organised a number of activities over the past 12 months.

As always, the highlight was our Past/Present Sports Tournament on 14 September, followed by our Annual Dinner.

Our guest speaker was Jeremy Redmore of Midnight Youth fame who entertained us with songs and stories.

Our Old Boy of the Year for 2012 was Dr Bryan Gould. Best known to us for his former role as Vice-Chancellor of Waikato University, Dr Gould himself had attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. He went on to become a leading member of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom, before taking up his position at Waikato. In speaking to Dr Gould at the Dinner, it was interesting to learn that his grandson is currently a student of the College. How appropriate.

At our 2012 Annual General Meeting we honoured Graham Anderson as a Life Member of the Association. Graham served the College for many years as a teacher. Many of our teachers give far more of their time and effort than they are required to do, and Graham was certainly one of these teachers. He has also been particularly supportive over the years in terms of the Old Boys' Association as well as the College itself.

Another significant item on our calendar this year was the show "Joseph" which was performed in the Graham Young Theatre. A group of Old Boys gathered in the Staff Room for some "social time" before enjoying what was an outstanding performance by some very talented young people from the College and from Tauranga Girls'.

We enjoyed good turn-outs of Old Boys at many of the College sporting events. The College continues to perform so well in so many areas it is difficult to keep up.

Informal gatherings of Old Boys were also held in London, Auckland and Wellington.

Future Activities

Activities for Old Boys over next 12 months are likely to be much of the same as the past.

With our experience over the past four years, we are finding what it is that you as new members are wanting of our Association in terms of activities and overall.

We are finding that each year there is growing interest and growing attendance and this is very encouraging.

This year's Sports Tournament and Annual Dinner will be held on Friday, 13 September 2013.

Our guest speaker will be Richard O'Brien of Rocky Horror Show fame. He is bound to be entertaining for both you and your partners.

Our Old Boy of the Year will be Tom Roper who will be known to many of you. Tom is a man who has stayed most of his adult life in Tauranga. He is a very successful businessman and a great worker for the community. He has always been a great supporter of the College.

This should be a great night so please put a table together. As always, for this type of function: the better the turnout the better it will be.

Life Member

The Association has the opportunity to elect a Life Member who "shall include any person honoured for meritorious service to the College or to the Association, after recommendation by the Executive as a Life Member by resolution at a General Meeting passed by a two-thirds majority of those present and voting".

We regard Life Membership as the greatest honour that we can bestow.

It is therefore appropriate to list our Life Members:

Garth Sim
Norm Morris
Graham Young
Max Heimann
Rob Naumann
Ron Buller
Graham Anderson

For this AGM, the Executive Committee has recommended Mrs Gillian Gemming.

More will be said about her at the AGM, but many of you will be well aware of the huge contributions made by Gillian as Chair of the Board of Trustees and as long-time coach and supporter of our hockey teams.

Executive

The Executive has continued to meet on a monthly basis over the past 12 months, with some of the tasks being handled by sub-committees.

The Executive for the 2012/13 year consisted of:

College Principal Robert Mangan
Staff Representative Rob Leslie
President Bill Holland
Vice President Simon Oldham
Secretary Mathew Billett
Treasurer Alan Neilson
Other Members Paul Gartner
Tony Lamberton
Rawiri Walker
Ben Rickard
Glen Strang
Scott Wikohika
Richard Craven

A number of these Members have been on the Executive from the outset.

Simon Oldham has always served as Vice President and he has made a wonderful contribution. He has, however, decided not to stand again. All other members have declared they are available for another term. We thank Simon for his work and for his continued support.

Positions remain open if others are prepared to all allow their names to go forward.

Financial Accounts

Audited accounts for the year ended 31 March 2013 will be presented at the AGM and you will find they are healthy.

You will see that we moved from a break-even situation to making a modest profit of $4,282.70. This is largely attributable to the success of our Annual Dinner.

We would like to build on this and to grow a fund of money which we can then use for the benefit of the College.

The Future

We have now completed our fourth year and the Association is in very good heart.

It has been helped by the stability of the Executive Members who have collectively given much of their time in bringing us to where we are now.

We must continue to work on increasing our Association membership and increasing participation in new events and activities.

As an Executive, we will continue to try to provide you with the events you have shown interest in.

In return, we would be grateful for your continued and expanded support.

Bill Holland

TBC Old Boys Update #3 2013

Hi everyone,

It has been a busy last week with the Old Boys Association hosting a Drinks and Nibbles event before the TBC/TGC productionof Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat in the Graham Young Youth Theatre which was an outstanding success and also a well supported Auckland function.

On August 5th we have our Annual General Meeting in the TBC staffroom beginning at 7 p.m. At this meeting we have traditionally awarded life membership and this year is no different with Gillian Gemming being honoured in this way.  Gill served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for years, had her 4 sons through the school and has been a significant driving force in the success of our hockey programme as she is Director of Coaching for the sport.  Blackstick Andy Hayward will be present and it would be great to have a big turnout, particularly of our hockey community.

Our annual Sports Day & dinner are on Friday September 13th so dust off those sports shoes and clear the diary so you can come along to the dinner where Rocky Horror Show writer Richard O’Brien is Guest Speaker.  Go tohttp://tbcoba.org.nz/ for tickets and more information.
We have always played rugby, football, basketball, volleyball and hockey as part of this event but we are now looking to arrange Old Boys T20 cricket and tennis in December or January so please let us know if you are interested.

TBC Academic

University Studies

Thirty one TBC students undertook studies at the University Waikato in their first semester and all passed their papers in Economics, Philosophy, Statistics and Chemistry. More than 32 “A” passes were achieved with the stand out performance being that of Todd Harris who scored A+ grades in Chemistry, Statistics, Philosophy & Economics.  Todd was top student of almost 200 taking Chemistry with 99.1% and has been offered a $5000 scholarship to assist one of the lecturers with their research during the summer holidays.

Youth Parliament

Head Prefect and 1st XV Captain Mungo Mason will travel to Wellington in the July holidays to be a Youth Parliament Representative for MP Simon Bridges working on the Select Committee for Health.  Mungo will miss the first 2 days of Parliament as he has been picked in the Chiefs Under 18 training squad and they are training for a match against the Blues or Hurricanes the second week of the holiday break.

TBC Sport

Rugby

The promising 1st XV season has continued with the only loss being 27-28 to strong Super 8 rivals Hamilton BHS in the Chiefs Cup.  St Paul’s Collegiate were comfortably beaten 35-14 and in the first Super 8 match of the season perennial bugbears Rotorua BHS were accounted for 31-26. Things have been tougher in the last encounters with disappointing 1 point losses to New Plymouth and Palmerston North BHS while in a rematch with Hamilton the score again was in the visitors favour with the result ending  24- 29.

A highlight for the team has been their training session running live defensive screens against the All Blacks before the French test in Auckland.

Old Boys Todd Jennings, Simon Oldham, Ra Walker, Charles Baxter, Jason Hona & Richard Craven enjoy 1st XV rugby on Nicholson Field.

Cross Country

Bay of Plenty Championships were held recently at Waipuna Park and TBC had a perfect event winning the Junior, Intermediate and Senior 3 and 6 man events as well as each individual title with Korban Eades (son of Old Boy Neville), Daniel Hintz and Luke Bradshaw respective winners.

Squash

The Bay of Plenty Secondary School Squash Championships has been held and TBC were dominant claiming the top 6 individual places. Joe Lyons emerged victoriousbeating Josh Oakley in the final.

Sailing

During the last holidays our sailors travelled to Taupo to contest the National Secondary School Team Racing Championships.  The side began very well, but frustrated by light winds towards the end of the competition they were overhauled by Kerikeri by 1 point.  This second result was enough to qualify for the InterDominions in Brisbane later in the year.

Following in the traditions of Olympians Peter Burling and Jason Saunderssailor Trent Rippey won the Under 19 Starling Nationals in Picton which is the largest single handed youth class with over 100 boats competing.  Trent also joined up with younger brother Cole to place 2nd in the 29er nationals.

Water Polo

If you would like to get more details get back to me ASAP as I will be in PN managing the 2nd XI hockey team. Anyone there it would be great to catch up !!!

A number of the teams above are priming well for tournament week as results below suggest ......

Rugby - 1st XV  Victory against Gisborne BHS meant our side placed 2nd in one of the closest Super 8 competitions ever
Rugby - 2nd XV Another good win from this side meant an unbeaten Super 8  and victory overall

Squash - NZ SS competitions have just been completed and our boys ended 6th in the country – their best ever result. The highlight was a 2-3 loss to Auckland GS who have been national champions for the last 5 years. All of our team return in 2010 so even better should be achieved then !!!!

Football - Our 1st XI, coached by James Pamment, had an impressive 4-2 victory away to Auckland GS and backed that up with promotion by winning their local competition. They should perform well at nationals.

Basketball - Our lads won this competition for the first time in a decade in dramatic fashion. They lost to 2 times champs PNBHS in pool play & then found themselves in a rematch in the final. Captain Adam Dunstan, who was MVP for the tournament, drained a clutch 3 pointer with 2 seconds left on the clock to take out a famous victory 66-65.

Hockey - The 1st XI had the last of their quad tournaments & performed extremely well against 3 Rankin Cup teams. We were 4-0 down against national champs Westlake BHS before fighting back for a 4 all draw, beat Hamilton BHS 4-1 & then in the final were beaten 4-3 by Auckland GS who are always in the running for top national honours.

That’s it for now,

Rob Leslie
